It’s a disaster of Titanic proportions. I received this e-mail earlier tonight.

“To whom it may concern,

We have recently received a complaint regarding files, which you have been sharing through your Box.net account, and infringe on previously-held copyrights.

As infringing on copyrights by sharing files through your Box account goes against the Box.net Terms of Service, we will deactivate your account on November 13, 2008.”

So. You have 1 week only to get all the stuff from here that you want. After that, everything’ll be gone. It’s not like I’ve been guilty of sharing the new Guns ‘n Roses album 4 weeks before it’s released, or any other Tesco shelf filling crapolla like Snow Patrol or Oasis. As you know, most of the stuff on here is deleted/hard to find old stuff that only people with incredibly good taste like us folk enjoy. Someone’s got it in for me, as Bob sang. I cannae believe it. I’m quite pissed off and upset, but there you go. Secretly, I’d like to think that, somehow, Prince stumbled onto Plain Or Pan?. It wasn’t long after his version of ‘Creep’ was posted that I had my first slap on the wrists. I also had another warning when I dared to post a Jesus & Mary Chain cover of ‘Alphabet Street’. I think wee Prince is a secret lurker on here. If you are reading this Prince, just to let you know, you used to be really, really magic…..

The good ship Plain Or Pan? will still be sailing. Future files will just be hosted somewhere else instead. But any music I am currently sharing will be gone gone gone forever, I’m afraid. Bastards. Grab em while you can folks, grab em while you can.

    On reflection, I think it can be positive to let go and move on.
    Let’s face it, we’re all on borrowed time with these music blogs, (not to mention the planet) no doubt my blog Thirdisland.blogspot will come under the hammer eventually.

  2. Weirdly I just spent about a few hours the other day going through all of your posts and gorging myself on all the goodness you’ve posted over the last couple of years. Thanks for all your hard work and good luck finding a job somewhere in music journalism, they could use someone with taste as good as yours. Checking out this site:

  4. just wanted to say i will miss your blog, and i hope that you know how much joy you brought to so many music nerds like myself. being able to listen to the guitar track by itself from ‘heard it through the grapevine’, you sir are magic.

  5. I’m really sorry to hear this Craig.

    This is one of the best blogs I think I’ve ever seen. The quality in the writing – which is obviously fuelled by the same passion that grips the hearts, souls and (occasionally) bowels of the bloggers on here – is laugh-out-loud funny on many occasions and the choice of tracks is never anything short of spectacular.

    Leaving aside the fact that the “Majors” have fleeced us poor unfortunate sufferers ([b]nobody[b] should know the catalogue number of any record off by heart… [b]nobody[b] :-)) mercilessly over the last few years…

    … I mean… is The Beatles back catalogue on mid-price yet?

    So we’ve been paying top whack over the last 46 years then?

    Has the jaw-droppingly gorgeous Swedish stuff that I greedily devoured been made available to a hungry public by a slack, apathetic, money-gorged rising executive at EMI?

  8. Sorry to hear about this hassle. Was it the Dylan stuff that did it?

    Anyway it’s pretty stupid because there is nothing here that detracts from usual* commercial sales. In fact your site hypes the artists.

    I just probably re-downloaded the Trashcan Sinatras and Teenage Fanclub stuff.

  9. With me having all sorts of PC probs over the past months and having no time to get round my fave places, let me say:-

    (a) sorry for being very late with this comment;and

    (b) very sorry that the bastrads have put the squeeze on you.

    Interesting that Simon from ‘The Songs That People Sing’ has had postings taken down that feature very hard to find songs unavailable commercially, leading him to believe that some very narrow-minded individuals, as well as corporare monsters, are using these DMCA notices.

    That I find shocking and frightening.

    Hope you keep things going through all this.
